Field Notes: Gardening with Kids
May 22, 2025
Yesterday, I was in the flower farm planting some seedlings when my kids got off the bus. After giving them all hugs and kisses, my 7 year old daughter decided to stay outside with me to finish planting the row. She happily chattered away about her day, her friends, asked what flower we were planting, and the things she learned at school. It was the highlight of my week and it reminded me that meaningful connection with my kids doesn't have to be elaborate. The best times are when we are doing the normal, everyday things. I'm still smiling about it as I write this email because it felt beautiful to me. What beautiful things did you notice this week?
Memorial Day weekend is garden planting weekend here. Add a few flowers around your veggies and they will both be happy.
Some of the most meaningful moments happen while doing the ordinary things. This week, gardening with kids looked like planting seedlings, listening to school stories, and standing side by side in the dirt as the afternoon unfolded. It was a quiet reminder that connection doesn’t have to be elaborate to be beautiful.
I was at my neighbor's house a couple weeks ago and she was making this. I had all the ingredients for it so I made it the very next day. It's not the prettiest meal in the world, but it's yummy and all my kids liked it. I served it as a rice bowl with taco toppings on top. I think it's a great crockpot meal for summer.
Field Notes:
Thoughts on supporting the people you love.
I love how she created a beautiful centerpiece with these simple bud vases.
I see lots of weeding in my future. This is my favorite tool.
May this weekend remind you how much beauty is already yours.
