Field Notes: Succession Planting Zinnias

field notes May 29, 2025

The shift into summer always feels like a deep exhale. School is out, the garden is finally planted, and life settles into a slower rhythm. This week held that familiar mix of ordinary joys—planting leftover tubers, baking banana bread, noticing what’s blooming—and small reminders that beauty often arrives right on time, especially in the garden.

We just finished up our last week of school and my kids are so excited to be home for the summer. And Wednesday night at 9 PM I officially finished planting all my annuals. I had about 15 left over dahlia tubers so I tucked them into my vegetable garden.

Field Notes:

I had some very ripe bananas and so I made banana bread this week. This is the best recipe.

My bearded Iris started blooming this week. They fill in the awkward gap between spring bulbs and peonies.

I've been living in these overalls this week. I have 2 pairs now. My favorite part is the stretchy straps. Size down.

I always succession plant my zinnias by starting some seeds early and then direct sowing some seeds when I plant the seedlings. These were my favorite zinnias last year. And I'm trying 2 new varieties called 'Ballerina' and "Aurora' This year.

Riding this with my kids has been on my bucket list for a long time and we are finally planning a trip!

May this weekend remind you how beautiful your life is.
