Fields Notes: Small Acts of Service With Flowers and Kindness

field notes May 15, 2025
Fresh cut flowers arranged simply in a jar, shared as a small act of service to brighten someone’s day.

If you’re looking for simple ways to practice small acts of service with flowers, this week offered a gentle reminder that it doesn’t take much.

From everyday arrangements to thoughtful giving, there’s something powerful about using what you have to care for the people around you. Read on for a few reflections, ideas, and reminders I’ll be carrying with me for a long time.

It felt so good to share flowers with friends and neighbors after a long winter. Yesterday was Bring Flowers to Someone Day and every day this week I went live on Instagram to show you simple ways to give flowers. A Mason jar arrangement, 2 ways to wrap a bouquet in craft paper, flowers in a mug, and repurposing an old candle into a bowl full of flowers. Then the best part was I gave each of them away.

The last arrangement I gave to a friend who donated one of her kidneys to her brother last week. I keep thinking about her sacrifice and selflessness. She didn't do it for recognition or for praise. She did it because she loves her brother. And that's the best part of serving others, whether it's with flowers, cookies, or kidneys, it is all about caring for the people around you and looking for opportunities, not matter how small to brighten someone's day.

Field Notes:

🌸 I got a new pair of flower snips this week and they are so sharp and wonderful!

🌸 I recently started following this gardener on Instagram and everything she posts feels so peaceful and beautiful. Like art.

🌸 How to repurposes a candle container into a vase.

🌸 My husband got me these boots for my birthday. They are so comfortable and I want to wear them all the time! Not just to garden! Lucky for me, it was raining this week so I wore them a lot!

🌸 And a little reminder that small acts of service go a long way.

May this weekend remind you how much beauty is already yours.
